S.N.A.F.U. -- An Old Acronym Gains New Meaning

At its core, the basis of the popularity of pro football is entertainment. This point was reportedly made to Joe Namath back before his rookie season with the Jets when he commented at dinner with owner Sonny Werblin and wife that he ( Namath) was still surprised at how much money he was set to make "... just for playing football". Mrs. Werblin allegedly corrected Joe by saying " You're in the entertainment business ".

Certainly true. And when it comes to entertainment, few NFL franchises have been more entertaining than the Atlanta Falcons. As opposed to enjoyable. The broad definition of the term entertainment is distraction, which may be happy or sad, or anywhere in between. Falcon fans certainly know that their entertainment has been of the unpleasant type for most of the past decade.

The term snafu is a good example of an acronym that becomes an actual word ( Other examples include radar and scuba). "Snafu", by legend, came about in the early days of World War II. It was an US Army slang abbreviation for the phrase " situation normal, all f' d up.

In the modern day NFL, snafu has taken on a more focal role.

Situation Normal, All Falconed Up.

It still stands for a measure of persistent ineffectiveness, mixed with lack of direction, and consequently, a broad lack of confidence in the big plan --along with the people executing that plan. The result is the absence of success.

Now again this year, the Birds have swept up and disposed of the old staff and installed new. Matt Ryan, Best Falcon Ever, is well - known and well- respected. And he is apparently the Man In Charge–aka " President of Football"--a role he's never held before.

That doesn't mean he can't succeed in building a winner. But there are certainly no guarantees.

And he's got a fresh coaching staff that is ready to go.

The first step is the 2026 draft. Unfortunately, the Falcons have only five picks, none of them first round. Tbe outgoing braintrust mortgaged the Falcons future heavily. So the pickings are slim.

And the Falcons have great uncertainty at the game's most vital position. Quarterback.

And that won't change with this draft. So the likelihood is that 2026 will be another frustrating season for the Birds. Which has become the norm.

Snafu.
